"In my childhood there was a streetlight on the corner of the street, opposite our house. At night, when all the other lanterns were burning, it didn't light up, but flamed up unexpectedly, sometimes during the day, when someone leaned against it or it was brushed by a passing horse-drawn carriage.
The adults said it was broken.
But it fascinated and occupied us, the children, very much: it seemed to us more interesting than all the others. This very streetlight, I think, is similar to my mind: incapable of sustained and systematized work, it functions unevenly and shuts down when given a task. I know that the serious people will not find much pleasure in him. But his sudden flashes and flare-ups will perhaps please those who have preserved their childlike eye for the charming."
